The Week in Review - 1/10/11 - 1/14/11

January is really getting me down.

It's been cold and inversion-y. I am not loving it. Most of the students are doing OK, but the ones that aren't are on my very last nerve.

REB: Damn, girl. I am so tired of having the same old conversation with you every. single. week. I'm just about done. Upside: you did better on the math practice test than I expected. Maybe, just *maybe* you won't fail at life. However, I really enjoyed teaching you about tolerance for other people's beliefs. Seriously, darling, if you want other kids to respect your belief in wizards and magick, you have to be willing to respect their belief that wizards and magick are bunk. Don't think you get to yell and scream in my face because I believe something different than you, dear. It goes both ways.

RFB: And YOU. You realize that the reason I'm having the whole fourth grade take practice tests is so that I can prove to you that you're not as smart as you think you are. Yep, that's my motive: taking you down a peg. Sitting with you and going over your test was delicious. I loved marking everything you got wrong and watching your eyes get bigger and bigger. Guess what - Mr. I-know-division-facts-theref0re-I-know-math: YOU DON'T KNOW MATH! You're going to fail your test if you don't get off your bum.

CNB: Really? You're going to go poking other boys in the pants now? I don't care that your motives were noble. Just. No.

January sucks. We're about halfway through.

This week we did some fun things in our cultural studies, though. Kati did the 5th GL, and we did some fun stuff with simple machines. We've got a work out where they can diagram some simple machines, and I put out a building set with experiment cards for them to construct a couple different classes of levers. We also watched some fun BrainPOP films.

My African biomes map came. It is so pretty! I introduced it to the students today, and they loved it. I haven't introduced the command cards yet, b/c I didn't have them cut, but I'm excited to share those, too. Our field trip to the library on Tuesday went smoothly, although we cut it very, very close on returning. My group - and I was the last one to leave the library - arrived back to school at 2:32. Still, we've got a basket of books on different African nations in the classroom, and there have been lots of lap books in the making. Some of the students have really gotten into the assignment, making some pretty impressive books. I can't wait to see the finished products.

Best thing about the week: Lap books
